4 Monjia Yaki Street

Monjayaki and Tsukudani are the most typical of Tokyo's "shitamachi" fare. Tsukishima is said to have more than 70 monjayaki shops and on weekends is thronged with people from Tokyo and even the suburbrs who come to savor the local delicacies. Tsukudani, prepared by stewing seafood in soy sauce and sugar, is also a typical type of Japanese keepable dish and was born in Tsukuda in the Edo era. There are still shops that preserve the secret recipe, attracting an endless stream of people who come from far off in seach of this treat.

This street also have a 24-hour supermarket (Seifu), a pharmacy, a Mizuho ATM and a few dry cleaning shops.

This shrine, a branch of Sumiyoshi Shrine in Osaka, is dedicated to the guardian god for the area encompassing Tsukudajima and Tsukishima. In addition to its annual festival, the shrine also holds a triennial grand festival. At this grand festival, a type of festival music called Tsukuda Hayashi, which is ranked among the best three examples of Edo festival music, is played while people carrying a huge portable shrine weighing nearly 400 kg, a long flag and two lion head representations jostle each other, creating great excitement throughout the area.

9 Tsukiji fish market

Tokyo Central Wholesale Market handled 787,782 tons (2,888 tons a day) of marine products, 748 billion yen (2.8 billion yen a day) total in 1993. Some 450 kinds of fish are received; this figure is unparalleled in the world. Marine products sections are set up in three markets: Tsukiji, Ohta and Adachi. Above all Tsukiji Market, handling 87% of the total amount, is one of the biggest markets in the world.

This complex hosts a food court on the ground floor and a shopping mall on 2nd and 3rd floors. There is also a supermarket and a concert hall.
